Addio a John Saxon, attore dei polizieschi all’italiana

È scomparso all’età di 83 anni John Saxon, nome d’arte di Carmine Orrico. L’attore italo-americano, nato a Brooklyn da genitori di origine italiana, ha alternato il suo lavoro tra Hollywood e Cinecittà ed è stato nel cast di numerosi film cult, soprattutto horror, spaghetti western e poliziesco all’italiana.

Orrico è morto a Murfreesboro, nel Tennessee, a causa delle complicazioni di una polmonite: a dare la triste notizia della sua scomparsa è stata la sua terza moglie Gloria Martel, sposata nel 2008.

Tra i suoi ruoli più celebri c’è quello del tenente Donald Thompson, il padre di Nancy, nel classico del cinema dell’orrore Nightmare – Dal profondo della notte; La legge violenta della squadra anticrimine di Stelvio Massi; Italia a mano armata di Franco Martinelli, Napoli violenta, I tre dell’Operazione Drago, recitato al fianco di Bruce Lee e Beverly Hills Cop III con Eddie Murphy.

Attivo anche nelle serie tv: L’uomo da sei milioni di dollari, La donna bionica, Starsky & Hutch, Dynasty, Melrose Place e più di recente in CSI – Scena del crimine e Masters of Horror.


John Saxon, the rugged actor who kicked around with Bruce Lee in Enter the Dragon and appeared in three Nightmare on Elm Street movies for director Wes Craven, died Saturday. He was 83.

Saxon died of pneumonia in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, his wife, Gloria, told The Hollywood Reporter. Saxon’s, played characters of various ethnicities during his long career, beginning in 1956 when he appeared as a disturbed high school football star who taunted Esther Williams in “The Unguarded Moment.”

An Italian-American from Brooklyn, Saxon was born Carmine Orrico on Aug. 5, 1936. He was the eldest of three children of an Italian immigrant house painter, the newspaper reported.

“Brooklyn was a tough place to grow up in, but it taught you survival, and if you were ambitious, it taught you to want better things,” Saxon once said.

Saxon also appeared in “Evil Eye,” “The Cardinal,” “Blood Beast From Outer Space,” “The Swiss Conspiracy,” “Wrong Is Right,” “Fever Pitch,” “Beverly Hills Cop III” and “God’s Ears.”
